All eyes on historic Europe!

HISTORIC EUROPE

DOMINATES LAST 8

A remarkable 7 of the 8 teams in the France 2019 quarter-finals are from UEFA - a record for one confederation at the Women's World Cup.

The previous best came at the 1991 and 1995 editions when all 5 European representatives went through

That means that Europe will have 3 teams in the France 2019 semi-finals, which has only happened once before in the FWWC (in 1991)

There is a very interesting historic precedent: the 1994 men's World Cup, where 7 of the 8 teams in the quarter-final were European.

However ...

In that case, the only non-European team won the event (Brazil at USA 94), and that sets up well for holders and favourites the United States, who make up the last 8!

The European Quarter-finalists:

  • Norway - Best finish = Winner, 1995
  • England - Best finish = 3rd place, 2015
  • France - Best finish = 4th place, 2011
  • Italy - Best finish = 1/4-finalists, 1991
  • Netherlands - Best finish = Round of 16, 2015
  • Germany - Best finish = Winner, 2003 & 2007
  • Sweden - Best finish = Runners-up, 2003
