Group C: Spain and Japan emerge

Two of the tournament favourites in Japan and USA joined emerging Spain in a tough Group C, where all three fought until the end to qualify for the quarter-finals. Paraguay ended up suffering the consequences of that close fight.

All four teams reached the final group matchday with the possibility of reaching the last eight. In the end, La Rojita managed to eliminate USA - who with one more goal scored in Dinan-Lehon would have put the Spanish out - while the Young Nadeshiko finished as runners-up.

Group C: Final Standings

  1. Spain - 7pts
  2. Japan - 6 pts
  3. USA - 4 pts
  4. Paraguay - 0 pts
Top Scorer

With four goals and two assists, Spain midfielder Patri Guijarro not only topped the scoring charts in Group C, she is also in a prime position for the adidas Golden Boot award, as the tournament's top scorer.

Player to Watch

Moeka Minami

At the age of 15, Minami won the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica and is looking for a world title repeat in France. The Japan captain leads her team's defensive line and contributes to the build-up of her team’s attacking play.

Our mentality is our biggest strength. Those players never give up and you could see that in the second half. We pushed, we believed, and we can leave here with our heads up.

USA coach Jitka Klimkova

It is the first time that three-time U-20 Women's World Cup champions USA have been eliminated at the group stage of this competition.
