With 27 international caps under his belt, Jonas Hector has become something of a seasoned campaigner in Germany’s defence. The 27-year-old played every minute of his country’s campaign at UEFA EURO 2016. Although usually a left-back, Hector can also play in defensive midfield or on the left wing. The Cologne defender was rewarded for his consistently strong performances in the German Bundesliga with his first international call-up in November 2014, making his debut against Gibraltar. By making the most of the opportunities available at left-back, Hector soon became a established member of the national team.
The left-footer boasts a robust tackling game and near flawless build-up play. His pace also helps him to switch into attacking mode with penetrating runs down the wing. A late bloomer, Hector only made his top-flight breakthrough in 2012 and was still playing in Germany’s fifth-tier Oberliga at the age of 18. Having never represented his country at youth level, Russia 2017 will be the defensive specialist’s first FIFA tournament.
