Bernd Leno has made four previous appearances between the posts for Germany, most recently in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifier against Azerbaijan in March. The 25-year-old Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper has represented his country at every age group and became European U-17 champion in 2009, despite being an unused back-up to Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Leno also travelled with the senior squad to UEFA EURO 2016 without making an appearance. Nevertheless, if the former Stuttgart shot-stopper is required in Russia, coach Joachim Low will be calling upon a goalkeeper with extensive national and international experience. Leno has played more than 200 Bundesliga matches for Leverkusen and Stuttgart and made over 50 appearances in UEFA club competitions.
