“Football is nothing without fans.” Those famous words from Jock Stein, legendary manager of Celtic Football Club from 1965 to 1978, still ring true today. Fans are the heartbeat of the beautiful game.
At The Best FIFA Football Awards 2016, fans of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund were awarded the inaugural FIFA Fan Award, due to their moving gesture of solidarity when they came together ahead of the side’s UEFA Europa League clash at Anfield to sing the Merseyside team’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on the eve of the 27th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.
The second edition of the FIFA Fan Award will recognise an outstanding fan moment or gesture, with a shortlist to be compiled by a panel of experts. Once this shortlist is announced, and as was the case in its inaugural year, football fans will be able to vote on FIFA.com for their winner of the 2017 FIFA Fan Award. An award for the fans, decided by the fans.
The nominees will be chosen by the following panel of experts, comprised of representatives from all six confederations:
- Jorge Campos (MEX)
- Han Duan (CHN)
- Jay Jay Okocha (NGA)
- Alex Scott (ENG)
- Carlos Valderrama (COL)
- Ivan Vicelich (NZL)
All award winners will be revealed at The Best FIFA Football Awards show in London on 23 October.
